A judge dismissed the murder appeal against a man accused of killing his wife in an acid attack.
+

+
Luka Rocco was cleared of the murder charge against the man by a jury on Tuesday (June 19).
+

+
The court in The Hague granted his request to have the case quashed.
+

+

+
It was an unusual move. But some believe the legal precedent set by the death penalty is at stake.

'I want people to respect that if I make the decision, it won't be used for any purpose other than my own'

Domenico Lombardi
+

+

+
Lombardi said he wanted to make a public statement defending his client's decision to kill himself.
+

+

+
"I want people to respect that if I make the decision, it won't be used for any purpose other than my own and not for any harm to him or his family," Lombardi said.
+

+

+
Lombardi said he believed the case would be dismissed because his client had no evidence against the other man charged with killing the wife, in a different case.
+

+

+
"He didn't find that there was any danger to the person, there was no danger to another person and so that would be the logical conclusion to find that there was no need for it," Lombardi said.
+

+

+
Lombardi did not name Rocco, but a few weeks after the murder, he posted an image to Facebook with the words "If this killer gets to see me he'll think the same about me".
+

+

+
The images are not the first, said one former prosecutor who spoke to the BBC.
+

+

+
"I think that's the beginning of what may be a trend among the police and others who see murder as a new weapon against anyone who opposes what they have to do," said Mark Koutrosian, who served as special assistant to President Ronald Reagan.
+

+

+
Some police and politicians, however, question the risk of overreaching.
+

+

+
"He has no criminal history and was on a death sentence before he committed these acts against the woman he loved and wanted to kill," Lina Schumacher, president of the National Association of Prosecutor's Associations, said.
+

+

+
"I think they've seen his actions and thought he deserves a second chance," she said. "If they're going to continue with the execution of innocent people, that's where we are."
+

+

+
A number of Italian judges have also said that death penalty appeals should be heard only by magistrates, not lawyers.
+

+

+
A criminal justice journalist with a website investigating corruption said that Lombardi's lawyer, Mario Giustio, who is also being sued by the wife's family, argued against the appeal.

Gorgon workers say poor communication a suicide risk for worker protection
+

+
Gorgon
+

+
A worker in Germany who worked for a company that provided Gorgon machinery is a suicide risk, according to an assessment by a German health ministry.
+

+
Lutz Bielke, 42, died in 2015 and his work with a German Gorgon company ended after two years.
+

+
Bielke had worked as an electrician at a Gorgon plant in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. He was not paid his full salary and was told he would not be able to work when he returned, said Dr. Christian Thies, the head of the workers' union's union at the plant.
+

+
Thies said he was "appalled to hear" about Bielke's death and asked the German government to establish a working body to investigate whether he was killed on contract, the AFP news agency reported.
+

+
"A tragedy. You don't want to be like that at work," he said.
+

+
"There are no official reports of this. A union official says it is a death that should have been prevented," Thies told the BBC.
+

+
When asked to comment, Thies said he was not aware of an official report on the case, but that the worker had been the victim of a serious breach of contract, since he refused to work for Gorgon once his contract expired.
+

+
According to a review by the workers' union in 2015, Bielke and another worker were given five days to decide whether to return to the plant or quit the company.
+

+
However, when the three refused and had been "wounded" by Gorgon's "unstable work conditions", Bielke was fired on 26 June 2015, the union said, without elaborating.
+

+
He had been working for Gorgon since June 2013. Bielke, from the town of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has been a Gorgon worker since 2008, before starting his apprenticeship with the company in 2012.
+

+
When he started working for Gorgon, a Gorgon spokesman said it is "unacceptable" to employ people on a contract.
+

+
"In any case, the employment of these workers on contract is not illegal - that's the aim of the contract," the company said in an email response to questions about the Gorgon case.
+

+
"In the event of a union complaint against any of our employees, in a confidential way (that is, we would like to discuss the facts behind the union complaint and do not want it to be published by the press) in no case shall we be held responsible."
